The Unique Experience of a Storybook Quilt

One of the most wonderful things about today’s world is that people live longer. More children have a chance to fully enjoy their grandparents; more grandparents have a chance to enjoy and guide their grandchildren. Grandparents have a special role a child’s life, providing a link to timeless traditions and activities that are both exciting and comforting.
One of the downsides about today’s world is that busy schedules or long distances can make spending time with grandchildren difficult. It is important, then, that the time we do spend together creates bonds that span time and distance. This is key to our mission at Storybook Quilts.
What is a Storybook Quilt? Well, imagine yourself cuddled up under a handmade quilt with a grandchild (or two!) reading an adventure story that is woven around the fabrics in the quilt. Together, you seek out the squares in the quilt that that mirror the story’s events. After a reading or two, that wonderful feeling of being held and read to becomes part of the quilt itself – always there for the child who hugs it, now and for years to come. That’s a Storybook Quilt!
Where did the idea for Storybook Quilts come from? It came from the founder’s childhood. She grew up on a farm where one measure of a man was his ability to tell a spell-binding tale based on everyday events and where women’s arts included creating comfort and beauty in quilts. Storybook Quilts melds these two time-honored traditions to create a new American treasure.
How are Storybook Quilts themes created? The process of creating a new theme is iterative. We think of a theme, then begin creating the appliquéd character while we look for fabrics that both work well together and allow us to write a good adventure story. We draft the story. Then we keep adjusting the story and changing the fabrics until we have both an exciting story and a visually-pleasing quilt. It’s still a wonderful surprise to us to see how the fabrics in the quilt, and the quilt itself, take on a real personality once the story is written.
What themes are available? Currently, Storybook Quilts are available in eight themes: Amos the Bear, Maggie the Dog, Dapper Dan the Snowman, Maurice the Cat, Winnie the Frog, Vroom Vroom the Sports Car, DanZy the Rabbit, and Luna the Turtle. We always have something new on the design board.
What makes a Storybook Quilt unique? Each is a limited-edition original. It can be personalized and customized by: embroidering a quilt square with wording you choose, printing in the storybook a photograph you provide and a message from you to your grandchild, and even tailoring the story to include family names and other details. Each Storybook Quilt includes a quilt handmade in the USA with an original adventure story woven around the fabrics in the quilt. Made from top-quality, 100% cotton fabrics, the quilts are made to be used and loved every day. The storybooks are professionally printed on high-quality papers.
