Ed. Note: Where to Retire shares desired destinations for those wishing to relocate after retirement. Provided by author Warren R. Bland, these summaries offer a quick overview of the most desired retirement communities.
By Warren Bland
Founded in 1828 when Arkansas was opened to American settlement and described 12 years later by a disgruntled resident as a lawless and uncivilized place, Fayetteville, Arkansas has matured into the region’s most sophisticated and attractive city. Today, Fayetteville is large enough to offer the amenities most people seek for an active retirement, in a relaxed yet vibrant college town.
Landscape: Fayetteville is situated amidst the gently rolling hills of the Ozark Plateau. The surrounding hills, mantled in a dense growth of broad-leafed deciduous trees, provide a lovely backdrop to the community’s well-treed and landscaped neighborhoods.
Climate: Fayetteville’s summers are hot and humid, its winters are mild and spring and autumn varies from day to day. The city is frost free 180 days and sunny about 60% of the time.
Quality of Life: Excellent. Traffic congestion is unknown. Residential neighborhoods are well treed, landscaped and maintained. Residents seem friendly, well educated and proud of their community.
Housing: Housing is about 5% below the national average. Fayetteville offers a good variety of desirable housing.
Goods and Services: Except for utilities, which are priced about 10% above the national average, goods and services costs are below national norms.
Taxes: State and local taxes in Fayetteville are 10% of income compared to the U.S. average of 9.7%. State income taxes approximate the national average, property taxes are lower than average and sales and excise taxes are higher than average.
Transportation: Most residents drive or take the bus or trolley. Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, 20 miles northwest of town, is served by five airlines that provide direct service to 12 major cities.
Retail Services: Northwest Arkansas Mall, Evelyn Hills Shopping Center, Fiesta Square and a casual farmers’ market offer a wide variety of shopping opportunities.
Health Care: Washington Regional Medical Center and the local VA Medical Center provide comprehensive, very good medical services. Additional medical facilities are found in Springdale and Rogers.
Community Services: Fayetteville, Washington County and the University of Arkansas offer a fine array of services to the public.
Cultural and Educational Activities: Fayetteville is an oasis of higher education and culture. A great variety of courses are available thanks to the University of Arkansas and Fayetteville public schools. The performing arts are well represented on campus and off.
Recreational Activities: Varied recreational opportunities are found in Fayetteville and the nearby Ozarks.
Work and Volunteer Activities: Part-time jobs are plentiful. The local RSVP can be helpful in placing you in a suitable niche in one of the community’s many public facilities or service organizations.
Crime Rates and Public Safety: Violent crime, local burglary and auto theft rates in Fayetteville are well below national norms. Several residents noted that Fayetteville is a safe college town with a good police department.
Conclusion: Fayetteville is one of America’s most pleasant and affordable college towns and is an excellent place for an active retirement.
