Habitat for Humanity

A recent news article discussed retired senior electricians, plumbers and carpenters who volunteer their time to help build homes. This is a demonstration of retirement life at its best.
While every story needs an angle, NBC Nightly News took the stance of “wouldn’t you rather be fishing instead of volunteering your time?” This clearly shows a dated and almost mythical view of retirement and the elderly volunteer.
While it’s probably true these men love fishing and golf, it fails to acknowledge that fishing and golf alone make for very sad existence. One of the most successful organizations for getting your hands dirty is Habitat for Humanity
Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity has built over 300,000 houses for impoverished and disaster-stricken areas around the world. In the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, Habitat for Humanity International provided aid to the thousands of citizens that were left homeless by the catastrophe. They have also provided relief to communities in Europe, Latin America, the United States, Canada, Africa, the Middle East, and numerous other locations across the globe.
The organization has made available various fulfilling ways to become involved. Those interested can find out how to make donations to Habitat for Humanity at their website, www.habitat.org. In addition to making donations, those willing may also volunteer directly in the building of houses for those in need at sites in countries around the world. Habitat for Humanity International also offers jobs for those who are especially enthusiastic about the project.
There are numerous programs available through the organization, all of which are listed on their website. Courses such as the Global Village program require healthy participants with a readiness to travel to Habitat for Humanity International sites around the world, while the RV Care-A-Vanners program provides a fun, more local experience for its senior volunteers.
No matter what approach is taken in volunteering for or making donations to Habitat for Humanity, the help is greatly appreciated. The organization truly shows that determination and a willingness to help can make an enormous difference in a world of underprivileged peoples.
